“Wait up, Hazel. I’ll walk you to class.”

I slowed my pace, not sure why I’d been in such a hurry. Benton, my best friend, caught up to me in a few strides.

“What happened yesterday?” he said. “We missed you in Science Club.”

“Oh, that...”

We passed a section of lockers and turned the corner to where we had English class.

“I was at Swim Club and then was, um, hanging out with Mom,” I said, my frown guilty. “Both activities are scheduled for the same time.”

Benton set down his books and squinted at me. “Swim Club? I thought you gave up on aquatics a long time ago.” He pushed his dark glasses higher up the bridge of his nose, and swatted away blond curls that hung over his forehead.

“Yeah,” I said, sitting down.

I tapped my foot, trying to decide how much to tell him. Benton hated swimming. Most sports, actually. We’d met in Science Club and had become close friends. But I wasn’t ready to tell him about Kai or the pearl jewelry.

“After my birthday weekend at the lake, I thought it would be good for me to swim a little better,” I said.

He snorted.

“What’s that?” he said, pointing to my wrist.

I winced, wishing I hadn’t been wearing Grandma’s bracelet.

“Pap gave it to me,” I said, adjusting the band so the pearls faced outward. “It was a birthday gift.”

“Oh.” Benton exhaled. “Between your revived interest in water sports and new jewelry, I thought you were hiding a secret boyfriend.”

I almost groaned. The end of the school day couldn’t come fast enough.
